Korean American Same-Race vs Different-Race Couples Birth Trends
Project Overview
Using CDC Fertility data and American Census Survey (ACS) data, we aim to explore the birth trends among Korean-American families in interracial and same-race couples. in light of declining birth rates in Korea, we examined whether this trend also exists among Korean-Americans and how interracial relationships influence brith rates.
Key Findings
- Between 2013 – 2022, it was more likely for Korean women to have birth with different race men (46%) than Korean men having birth with different race women (35%).
- However, Korean men experienced a 13% point drop between 2013 and 2022 in having children with Korean women. Korean women experienced a 10% point drop.
- For both Korean men and women, less births were reported with same-race spouse compared to different-race spouse. However, the difference is minimal and needs further analysis to determine the significance.
- The difference in birth rate between same-race and different-race couples was most notable in 2019, showing ~3% gap for both Korean men and women. Birth rates with non-Korean spouse tend to be a little higher (around less than 2%) in most years. However, the difference is minimal and needs further analysis to determine the significance.
